YMCA Policies

Membership Refund Policy

YMCA memberships will be refunded within a thirty day period of purchase, minus a 15% service charge. Memberships are non-refundable after thirty days. Memberships are non-transferable.

Make Up Class Policy

Classes cannot be made up or switched without the approval of the professional director before the day of the class.

Open Swim Policy

You must be six years of age to participate in open swim. Children under six may swim if an adult is in the water with them, and that adult must be a YMCA member or being a paying guest of the YMCA. Street clothes are not permitted on deck.

Credit Policy

Anyone receiving a credit at the YMCA will have one year from the date of the credit issued to use the credit before forfeiting it.

Parent Observation Policy

This is a very busy YMCA! We run a large number of children through our programs, especially gymnastics and swimming. Because the safety of these children is our primary concern, we feel we must make our policies in their best interest.

Listed below are the main reasons that we limit parent observation:

  1. Additional people in the gym or pool create additional noise and movement which distracts many children from their lesson. When they are distracted and not concentrating on what they are doing, safety becomes more of an issue. Gymnastics coordination and swimming drills require the children’s attention to do them properly. Anything which diminishes their attention level compromises efforts to make the program as safe as possible.
  2. Parents often bring their other children with them during observation. At times, these other children dart about the teaching area, creating a safety hazard for themselves as well as others. In the pool, having to watch unsupervised children in the bleachers or on the pool deck means the teachers must give their class less than one hundred percent attention – a real safety hazard considering the potential danger in the water.
  3. Many children do not seem to listen as well when a parent is present. There is a tendency to show off or not listen to the instructor. The instructor then may need to spend more time disciplining, taking away from the quality of their instruction.
  4. Some adults are not comfortable with people watching when they are learning to perform physical skills. Some children feel the same way, uncomfortable or embarrassed if they don’t think they are performing as well as someone else.
  5. Finally, children want more than anything else to please their parents. When parents are present, the children look to them for approval or acknowledgment. Sometimes parents try to correct their children, or visibly show their displeasure with their children’s efforts. We feel that the children should not be put under this pressure, and want their experience to remain as pleasant as possible.

We hope that you understand our reasoning. We understand your concern for your child, but feel we can best teach them by following a policy of limited observation days. Thank you.

Parking Policy

For the safety of your children, the YMCA is asking that you not park in front of the building when you are picking up your children from the YMCA. If you are dropping your children off for classes, please feel free to do so at the sidewalk area. When you are picking up your children, you will find it convenient to use the north side of the building to park and enter the building. Thank you.

Pickup Policy (after hours)

The YMCA staff will be responsible to make phone calls to the parents of a child that is under the age of thirteen and still present at the YMCA after the building has closed. The staff person will stay with the child for up to thirty minutes after a phone call has been made. In the event that no one arrives to take the child home, the YMCA staff member will contact the Ashland Police Department and have them come to the YMCA and pick up the child to either take them home or to the police department. YMCA staff members will not transport children home, even with a parent’s permission.

Aquatic Preschool Program Pickup Policy

When a swim class ends, the instructor will watch to make sure that all children in his/her class are picked up. If a child has not been picked up and the instructor has a class immediately following, the child will be asked to wait in a chair on the pool deck. If the instructor does not have a scheduled activity, he/she will walk to the child to the front lobby area and the child may wait for a parent in the front office area.

Preschool Gymnastics Program Pickup Policy

When a gymnastics class ends, the instructor will watch to make sure that all children in his/her class are picked up. If a child has not been picked up, the instructor will take the child to the front lobby area and the child may wait for a parent in the front office area. All parents should become familiar with these procedures. Any parent who does not wish for the instructor to leave their child in the front office area will need to make other arrangements with the instructor. Again, it is the parent’s responsibility to discuss this with the instructor. All instructors will follow the procedures stated above unless otherwise asked by a parent. We sincerely hope that this will alleviate concerns parents have in the event that they should be late picking up their children.

Program Refund Policy

Request in writing made prior to the first class – 100%. Request in writing made after the first class – 50%. Request made after the second class – NO REFUND. Canceled programs – 100% refund or the amount may be credited towards another course or class but must be used within a one year period. Once a credit is chosen, no refund will be given.

Weight Room/Myers Wellness Center Policy

You must be sixteen to use the weight room and Myers Wellness Center. Youth between the ages of thirteen and fifteen must take a YMCA weight training course. There is no cost to YMCA members. Thirteen year old youth must take the class with a parent and the parent must also be present with the youth during the times they are using these facilities. This policy is for the safety of our youth.

Weather Alert Policy

For your safety, the swimming pools will close when a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING has been issued for the area. The pools will remain closed until the warning has been canceled. During a TORNADO WARNING, the YMCA will close all recreational and class facilities and will remain closed until an ALL CLEAR has been given. During such time, building occupants will be asked to move to the lower level of the building. Children will not be sent home until an ALL CLEAR has been given, unless a parent arrives to pick them up. The YMCA is not responsible for weather related cancellations for facility shutdowns, and classes will not be made up or refunds given.

Hand Key Policy

Due to the fact that many people are using your YMCA who are not members, we ask that everyone use the hand key upon entering the building. This includes those members only using the weight rooms. If you are a YMCA guest, we ask that you sign in upon your arrival at the front desk. This is for everyone’s safety.
