Children’s Karate Classes

The children’s classes are taught by Sensei Sherry Howe. Sherry is a sixth degree black belt and a licensed family counselor. Three levels of karate classes are offered for children. The classes for children in grades one through sixth are divided into two levels, low and high rank. A third level is offered for preschool and kindergarten youth. This class is called Karate Moves. Parents may participate along with their children in this class. Please wear loose comfortable clothing. Class length is thirty minutes.

Low Rank Class

This class is for beginners and covers the basics of stances, hand defends, kicking and punching skills. The emphasis will be on developing self discipline, respect for others, and using karate only for self defense. All first through sixth grade youth must start in this class and will be moved to the High Rank Class when the instructor feels they are ready. Wear loose, comfortable clothing until you have earned your uniform. Class length is one hour.

High Rank Class

This class builds on these skills to include self defense techniques, kata, weaponry, falling, and take downs. All ranks up to black belt may be earned. Promotional Certification Seminars for degree advancement are held at the Ashland YMCA unless otherwise noted. The cost of each certification is $35.00.

Uniforms: Students will contract with their parents for the cost of the uniforms during the class that they are in. Your instructor will have more information about uniforms.

Adult Karate

The fighting art of the empty hand. This ancient oriental art will be taught by Larry Overholt and Paul Hennen. Training includes stances, punching, kicking, blocking, breathing, katas self defense, and body conditioning. Weaponry and more advanced techniques are taught as a student progresses. All grades below black belt and black belt degrees can be earned. The instructors reserve the right to alter or change the training required for advancement. Call length is an hour and a half. Youth must be twelve years old and have written permission of their parents. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Promotional Certification Seminars for degree advancement are held at the Ashland YMCA unless otherwise noted. The cost of each certification is $35.00 with the exception of black belts or otherwise noted.
